Resume and Statement of Qualifications
for Wiemeyer Ecological Sciences
Darren Wiemeyer, Ecologist

I, Darren Wiemeyer, principal ecologist and sole proprietor of Wiemeyer Ecological Sciences, have over fourteen years of experience in the biological field. I have worked in Sonoma County and on the Santa Rosa Plain for over eight years. My local knowledge of ecological principles and my relationship with local and regional regulators gives me the ability to effectively and efficiently provide ecological services in Sonoma County and surrounding counties.

I specialize in wetland delineations, biological assessments, special-status species surveys, regulatory permitting, resource planning and mitigation and conservation banking. I have experience in design and implementation of wetland and stream restoration projects. I have experience in performing site assessments for California tiger salamander and California red-legged frog in Sonoma County and I have experience with mitigation planning and regulatory consultation assistance for these species and for federally listed plant species. I have worked on several wetland mitigation banks and habitat conservation banks in Sonoma County.
My close working relationship with Marco Waaland of Golden Bear Biostudies and many other highly respected Ph.D. biologists and wetland ecologists over the years has given me the opportunity to gain valuable expertise in the ecological field, especially mitigation and conservation banking, wetland construction and aquatic species biology.

EXPERIENCE
Staff Ecologist, Senior Ecologist, Golden Bear Biostudies (June 2004 – September 2007) - Managed and supervised many projects as a senior ecologist and project manager. Prepared budgets, proposals and contracts. Managed all aspects of client projects, including coordination and oversight of projects, baseline studies according to federal and state protocols, regulatory permitting and compliance, construction monitoring and compliance, and reporting.
Conducted wetland delineations and biological assessments, including special-status species surveys, both plant and animal species, for multiple project sites in Sonoma County and surrounding counties. Field assessments included identifying and mapping vegetation and habitat types including sensitive plant communities, performing wildlife habitat assessment and nesting raptor surveys. Reports were prepared and submitted to assist municipal planners with CEQA compliance, for regulatory agencies for permit authorization and consultation, or for the establishment of preserves and conservation banks.
Prepared and obtained authorization for United States Army Corps of Engineers Nationwide 404 Permit Applications, State Water Resources Control Board 401 Water Quality Certifications and California Department of Fish and Game 1602 Lake and Streambed Alteration Agreements for multiple projects in Sonoma County and surrounding counties.
Assisted with protocol-level surveys and performed habitat assessments for various state and federally listed animal species including California red-legged frog, foothill yellow-legged frog, California tiger salamander, northwestern pond turtle and several raptor species. Assisted Dr. Michael Fawcett with California red-legged frog night surveys at several sites in Sonoma County. Identified and handled many adult California red-legged frogs. Prepared California red-legged frog habitat assessments.
Performed California tiger salamander pit fall trap surveys and assisted with salvage and translocation projects for California tiger salamander at several sites in the Santa Rosa Plain under the direction of Dr. Fawcett. Assisted Dr. Fawcett with California tiger salamander aquatic surveys at many sites in the Santa Rosa Plain. Prepared California tiger salamander habitat assessments.
Conducted biological, floral, and wetland hydrology monitoring at several wetland mitigation banks in Sonoma County. Prepared monitoring reports for compliance with regulatory permit authorization.
Prepared mitigation bank documents, including Management Plans, Bank Development Plans, Bank Enabling Instrument documents and Mitigation Bank Review Team documents. Negotiated with regulatory agencies on behalf of clients to establish wetland mitigation banks and habitat conservation banks in the Santa Rosa Plain.
Project Biologist, Senior Biologist, EnviroNet Consulting (1999 - 2003); SCS Engineers (2003 - 2004) - Performed various tasks for these environmental consulting firms. Assisted with development of the biological department through preparation of proposals and budgets, management of projects, and oversight of employees. Performed wetland delineations, prepared wetland delineation reports, prepared wetland and stream restoration and monitoring plans, conducted habitat assessments for threatened and endangered species, prepared biological assessment reports, and assisted clients with regulatory permitting. Work was conducted primarily for land developers, lumber mills, electrical power plants, and marine cargo handling facilities.
Additional tasks included preparation of Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans for industrial and construction sites, client assistance with storm water compliance issues, supervision and implementation of erosion and sediment control measures on industrial sites and development projects, preparation of Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plans for petroleum storage facilities, and preparation of Hazardous Materials Business Plans. Work was conducted primarily for land developers, lumber mills, electrical power plants, and marine cargo handling facilities. Also performed tasks relating to emergency spill response and cleanup, soil and groundwater investigations and monitoring, and Phase I Environmental Site Assessments.
Notable projects include: 1) assistance with a research project to determine contaminant levels and assess potential impacts to fish and invertebrate populations in Humboldt Bay from dioxin and furan contamination; 2) assistance with a study to determine the feasibility of a phytoremediation project to facilitate intake of wastewater effluent from an electrical power plant.
Forestry Technician, North State Resources, Inc. (1995-1998) - Worked as part of a field crew, and later as a crew leader, conducting forest inventory surveys for the United States Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis Department in California. Responsibilities included supervision of field crews, management of field gear and supplies, and forest inventory data collection and reporting.
Biological Monitor, North State Resources, Inc. (1997) - Worked as part of a field crew to enforce biological mitigation measures on a multi-agency fiber optic line construction project in the Mojave Desert in Southern California. Explained issues of environmental impacts and regulatory compliance to contractors, primarily regarding impacts and disturbance to desert tortoise and their habitat. Training was provided to conduct desert tortoise surveys and habitat assessments.
Wildlife Field Biologist for the following companies:
1) North State Resources, Inc. (1995) - Worked as part of a field crew performing wildlife surveys in the Klamath Mountains of Northern California. Protocol level surveys were conducted for marbled murrelet for a study project for the Six Rivers National Forest. Additional work conducted as part of the study project included forest bird point count surveys and vegetation sampling. Performed protocol level surveys and nest searches for northern goshawk and pileated woodpecker for Sun Pass State Forest in Southern Oregon. Performed protocol level surveys for northern spotted owl on various projects in Northern California for timber harvest plans and land acquisitions.
